Reminds me of the Douglas Walsh court case in '54 when the WTS was forced to admit they prophecied falsely but that all JW's were forced to accept it as truth

Another LIE Stated in the Watchtower....with proof!
by gumby inthe society has always been cleaver enough with wording to skate around many things.
they use gramatical trickery which makes for many ' written skapegoats' they've used to protect ther validity as jehovahs mouthpiece.. i found a quote by them when researching for something on another thread and thought it was interesting.. below is an article in a 1993 awake!
march 22, pages 3-4.

The Atheist's Book of Bible Stories - new - The Demon of Saskatchewan
by RunningMan inwell, i have once again put finger to keyboard and produced another article.
i have to say that i have never had as much fun with a subject as with this one.
you can really see the goofyness of religion under the demon microscope.

Good stuff as always Runningman
I know my grandma thinks every man and his dog has demons or is under demonic influence. Even my grandad who was a JW used to say 'give satan a break, I bet he's up there thinking I had nothing to do with what she's accusing me of'

Hiya Lowden. Yeah I'm gonna finish it too, it's always interesting reading stuff like this. Just not quite my philosophical cup of tea.
If your looking for an indepth critique of the OT & NT I can recommend 'Is It God's Word?' by Joseph Wheless. I've got it on my webspace along with a few others that might be of interest http://homepage.ntlworld.com/ataru/ebooks.htm

Do Mormons have a more intellectually substantial belief system than JWs?
by slimboyfat inthat seems to be the implication in a new evangelical response to mormonism called "the new mormon challenge: responding to the latest defenses of a fast-growing movement.".
http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/asin/0310231949/qid%3d1142896789/202-9316169-3351050.
this books presents a sophisticated response from serious scholars in fields of theological and religious studies who bring their expertise to bear on controversial mormon truth claims.

Bringham Young University
Isn't that the JW university for pedos and kiddy fiddlers?
Mormon beliefs are pretty weird. I'm not sure what 'serious scholars' are arguing for it's doctrines to be taken more seriously. Perchance they're all graduates of LDS universities.
I'm not sure about the inherent evil of Tim Hortons. When I visited Canada I lived on Subways and Tim Hortons coffee and donuts. Starbucks is different matter though, they're the bastard spawn of beelzebub himself

I'm about halfway through and I don't know if I can finish it
I'm frankly extremely disappointed with the text. Nathaniel Merritt, the author, seems to be extremely fond of substituting mainstream christian thinking with his own brand of gnosticism. While many of his points regarding the polytheism of the OT and the mythical nature of Adam & Eve etc etc are valid they're not new by any means. All of his arguments are pulled from other peoples research, which he seems to take at face value depending on whether it fits his own beliefs. I'd rather have a well researched critique from a bona fide scholar on ancient theologies and languages than from someone with their own angle passing judgement on the subject.
From reading Mr Merritt's history it seems he's been a confused individual for a while and has been searching for some sort of spiritual enlightenment for most of his life. He's settled (for the time being) on a mysticism that fits himself, his personality and his circumstance and not the reality of the world and the universe as they actually are, and science proves they are.
My opinion is I wouldn't recommend this book and the number of 5 stars handed out to this book on Lulu.com is misleading. There are much better researched, more informed, less derivative books available on composition of the OT and NT scriptures.
I'll try and finish the book and hope it gets better but I'm thinking it was $5 wasted.

said at our assembly that our research of the bible teaches us that jehovah is a "what have you done for me lately" god.. really nice!.
the society continues to make jehovah impossible to please.

I agree with what U/D said about speakers wanting a legacy. CO's and speakers at assmeblies are as bad as politicians in always looking for soundbites.
I'm no believer in the bible but isn't the point of the new testament that putting faith in Jesus is enough?
The quote should be rephrased "The watchtower society is a what have you done for me lately society", considering the fact that they enumerate, correlate, judge on and put great store in their excel spreadsheet of salvation that has ministry hours, mags placed meeting attendance etc etc

How many partook in 1935?--BIG discrepancy in the WTS numbers
by M.J. inin a 1996 questions from readers, the watchtower reported the following regarding the number of partakers in 1935: .
w96 8/15 p. 31 questions from readers ***.
the facts over the decades reflect both the completion of the calling of the anointed and jehovahs blessing on the growing "great crowd," who hope to survive "the great tribulation.

OldHippie - these are the figures from the proclaimers book:
1935 - 52,465
1940 - 27,711
1945 - 22,328
1950 - 22,723
1955 - 16,815
1960 - 13,911
1965 - 11,550
1970 - 10,526
1975 - 10,550
1980 - 9,564
1985 - 9,051
1992 - 8,683It's interesting how they've picked out five year intervals which makes it seem like the partakers have steadily dropped with no fluctuations. There's no explanation of the reason for the high 1935 figure and it's explained figures pre '35 were patchy and unreliable.

Survey: Are JWs superstitious?
by osmosis ini've often noticed various superstitions in my aunt & uncle.
for example, on at least two occasions i remember my aunt talking about blood transfusions and when actually pressed on the matter, she resorts to an argument that is essentially superstitious, something about jesus saying the life force was in the blood or something.
and they actually believe that there are demons, so therefore there are certain things you shouldn't touch or look at, like outsider information.

Jw's are incredibly superstitious. They have a morbid fascination with demons, more so than with God even. One of the biggest factors keeping them trapped in the org is the fear of Satan and his demons and the WTS protrayal of the outside demon controlled world as a vicious, unhospitable moral wilderness. My family never buy secondhand goods in case a tiny demon is hiding inside. They won't even borrow goods from people in the cong for the same reason! They still beleive tiny demons are hidden in nicotine and when you smoke they fly inside. My gran especially thinks that anyone with any degree of natural talent has a demon controlling them like a puppet master. In fact anything that happens in the world; earthquakes, a murder, getting a flat, stubbing your toe, they think has demonic influence. It's a mentality that belongs in the middle ages with exorcism of sinners and witch burnings.

New System Questions
by sandy inok, so the new system is just around the corner, right?
if you mary your deceased best friend's fiance what happens when the three of you meet up again in the new system?
i mean i know the reasoning that the dead will be resurrected to perfection and will feel no more physical pain but what about the emotional pain?

New Worldly Translation
I think the trouble is that the bible nowhere mentions a paradise being restored on earth. All scriptures in context and inference, even the ones the org use to back their teaching from the NWT (which are mostly mis-translated) suggest a heavenly reward only. Which is why for hundreds of years the heavenly calling was the teaching of the christian church.
The org have never fully explained this one and it's the one issue my parents have a real problem with. My mum won't even get on a plane cos she says if it crashes and she dies she'll be resurrected and won't be able to marry!
